"This highly skilled sushi chef has a wholesome life running his restaurant in Starr Park, but it feels like he's trying to hide something from his past... though his sushi tastes so good, nobody cares!"

Kenji is a Legendary Brawler who has a high health, a variable damage output, and a very fast movement speed. His Trait allows him to regain health after attacking enemies. His attack alternates between a dash and a slash. In the first attack, he dashes a few tiles forward, dealing moderately low damage to enemies in his path. In the second attack, he instead swings his katana in a wide and close-ranged arc, dealing moderate damage. For his Super, Kenji lobs a fish over obstacles, quickly slashing in a cross pattern where the fish lands, which deals high splash damage to enemies. His first Gadget, Dashi Dash, makes him dash in every attack for 3 seconds. His second Gadget, Hosomaki Healing, recovers most of his recently lost health. His first Star Power, Studied the Blade, increases the range of Kenji's Super slashes. His second Star Power, Nigiri Nemesis, grants Kenji a special shield after not taking damage that partially reduces damage from the next enemy attack. His Hypercharge, All You Can Eat, pulls enemies to center of the Super's slashes, and Kenji returns to the center of the slashes when the Super is over.

Trait

"This Brawler regains health with every attack that damages an enemy."

Whenever Kenji deals damage to an enemy Brawler, he regains health that is 35% of the damage dealt.

Attack: Dash 'n' Slash

"Kenji's basic attacks alternate between a Dash and a Slash. Dash deals damages to all enemies in a straight line and Slash deals damage to all enemies in a wide area in front of him."

Kenji's attack sequence alternates between a dash and a slash. For his first sequence, Kenji dashes forward a short distance, similar to Mortis, dealing moderately low damage to any enemy Brawlers in his path. Kenji can't perform his attack without dashing unless he dashes toward a nearby wall, where his dash is cut short. This is technically a melee attack because Kenji has to dash directly onto the enemy to damage them and the dash has a short range. For his second sequence, Kenji swings with his katana, hitting enemies in a wide arc that deals moderate damage, similar to Bibi.

Super: Slashimi

"Kenji targets an area with precise slices, dealing heavy damage and gaining invulnerability for the duration of the Super."

Kenji throws a fish over obstacles, and disappears from the map, becoming impervious to all attacks and simultaneously removing all negative effects on him. When it lands, he quickly slashes twice across the spot where it landed in a cross pattern, dealing high damage with each slash. When the Super is over, he returns back to where he was before activating his Super. The Super cannot be aimed so that the cross pattern goes over the edge of the map.

Gadgets

Dashi Dash

"Kenji's basic attack only uses Dash for the next 3 seconds."

Activating this Gadget causes all of Kenji's attacks for the next 3 seconds to be his dash attack.

Hosomaki Healing

"Kenji instantly heals 50% of the damage taken over the last 3 seconds."

Kenji instantly recovers health for 50% of the damage taken over the last 3 seconds. When the Gadget is equipped, a red bar on Kenji's health shows how much health he will recover when using the Gadget.

Star Powers

Studied the Blade

"Slashimi's slices have 30% longer range."

The length of the slices of Kenji's Super are increased by 30%. This Star Power also increases the distance of which the Super must be played from the edge of the map.

Nigiri Nemesis

"After avoiding damage for 5 seconds, gets 60% damage reduction from the next enemy attack."

After not taking damage for 5 seconds, Kenji gains a special shield that reduces the next enemy attack's damage by 60%. This effect is applied before the Shield Gear.

Hypercharge: All You Can Eat

"Pulls enemies to the middle of his Super, and re-appears in the center of the X instead of at the starting location."

When activated, Kenji's Super pulls enemies for 1 second in a 5-tile radius around the center of the slashes 4 tiles inward, until they are 1 tile away from the center of the slashes. When the Super is over, he returns in the center of the slashes. Kenji also gains a 25% speed and damage boost, as well as a 5% shield boost.

Wasabi Power

"Extremely fast reload speed!"

Kenji has a significantly faster reload speed, to the point he has almost unlimited ammo.

Tips

Recommended Build

  • Kenji's Dashi Dash Gadget is useful for catching up to enemies who are low on health, or Brawlers that are helpless in close range, like Piper. When doing this, use your dashes unpredictably to lower the chances of said brawler hitting you.
  • Kenji's Dashi Dash Gadget can also be used to quickly reach the gem mine in Gem Grab, the zone in Hot Zone, or the ball in Brawl Ball.
  • While you can use Kenji's Dashi Dash Gadget to escape from dangerous situations, it is generally preferred to use the Hosomaki Healing Gadget as other brawlers may have abilities to catch up with you and kill you.
  • It is best to use Kenji's Hosomaki Healing Gadget after you have taken large amounts of damage, such as from a Shelly, Tick, Mandy, Dynamike, Nani, or Colt's Super. Do not try to wait and activate the Gadget to get more healing, unless you are certain that it will pay off as timing the Gadget right is important. Activating the Gadget too late will decrease the effectiveness of the Gadget as the 3-second duration may have expired. You could also get killed by other brawlers if you decide to remain at low health and not activate the Gadget.
  • In open maps, where snipers with high-damaging attacks like Maisie, Piper, Brock, Bea, Nani, and Mandy likely to be present, the Nigiri Nemesis Shield is especially valuable as it will allow you to tank a large amount of damage from their first attack. However, do not get reckless, as once the shield is gone, Kenji is completely vulnerable to them until the shield recharges. In this case, use Kenji's high mobility to dodge shots and recharge the shield, and use the Hosomaki Healing Gadget to escape if something goes wrong.

Game Modes and Maps

Other

  • When against Kenji, it is important to not get hit by his Super, as this not only heals him for a sizable amount, it contributes to a second Super, allowing him to chain Supers and become almost impossible to defeat. Kenji needs his targets to be in the center of the Super for maximum damage, so if you suspect he will Super on top of you, move in a non-diagonal direction to make both slashes miss.
  • Chip damage is very useful when playing against Kenji as this prevents him from healing and reduces the effectiveness of his Hosomaki Healing Gadget. While his Nigiri Nemesis Star Power can help tank one shot, he remains vulnerable after that as dealing consistent chip damage to Kenji will prevent the shield from being activated again.
